INTRODUCTION (Con'd)
ROOT CAUSES
I originally intended to identify ten root causes. Ten always seemed like the right number, probably because of
the popularity of the top-ten segment on David Letterman’s TV show.  I remember from my youth the top-ten
songs on the weekly Hit Parade show on radio and TV—illustrating the power of media in our lives.  I also
recall the F.B.I’s list of ten most wanted men.  Of course, I almost forgot—the Ten Commandments.  Version
1.0 of this reflection listed and discussed ten root causes, but a woman reviewer called me to task for leaving
out sexism.  A telling omission. This version rectifies the omission and has 11 root causes. There are more to
come, including rigidity, immaturity, insularity, misplaced loyalty, anti-modernisn, Catholic fundamentaism, and a
big one, Manichaeism.

I present the 11 root causes in descending order, like the Ten Commandments, not bottom up, as on the
Letterman show or the Hit Parade show.  Root Cause Number 1 is the most important.  Root Cause Number 2
is next in importance, and so on.  The reader will find the root causes are not independent. Rather they are
highly coupled and interrelated. The root causes are:
1.        Idolatry
2.        Authoritarianism
3.        Clericalism
4.        Celibacy
5.        Sex
6.        Sexism
7.        Fear
8.        Dishonesty
9.        Distrust
10.      Incompetence
11.      Passivity
The personal reflection concludes with my dreams, notes, and acknowledgements for many helping hands.
